More About Santa Rosa, California
Located an hour north of San Francisco, in the North Bay region, Santa Rosa is easy to get to by car, train, or air, and features a wide range of accommodation options for every budget.
In addition to being known for its stunning beauty, acres of vineyards, redwood trees and coastal escapes, Santa Rosa and Sonoma County offer world-class beer, wine and culinary experiences.
The Santa Rosa Marathon and Half Marathon were first run in 2009. That year, race organizers weren’t sure they’d have enough participants to hold the event. Ten years later, the Santa Rosa Marathon weekend is the largest sporting event held in Sonoma County, attracting 6,000+ runners from all 50 states and 14 countries.
The flat and FAST Marathon and Half Marathon courses run through downtown Santa Rosa and along the Santa Rosa Creek trail. The Marathon course also extends into West Sonoma County passing numerous scenic vineyards and running through the barrel room of DeLoach Winery.
The Marathon course is U.S. Track and Field-sanctioned and certified, and the event is a qualifier race for the Boston Marathon.
5K and 10K Races
Runners seeking a shorter distance have the opportunity to participate in our 5K and 10K races that run through downtown Santa Rosa. The 5K and 10K races are perfect events for families, newer runners, and those just looking for a great way to spend a sunny wine country morning out and about.
The Santa Rosa Marathon provides experienced pacers for both the full and half marathons. Members of the pace team will be at the expo to answer any questions and share their experience with you. There is no need to sign-up with the pacers in advance – just keep an eye out for them in uniform with pace signs on Sunday morning. They will be thrilled to say hi and meet some new running friends!
Pacers for the half marathon range from 1:30 to 2:40 finish times at 10 minute increments (1:30, 1:40, 1:50, 2:00, 2:10, 2:20, 2:30, 2:40)
Pacers for the full marathon are planned from 3:03 to 4:58. All of the Boston Qualifying times will have a pacer. Note, each full marathon pacer is placed 2 minutes in front of the BQ time in order to have a small cushion in front of the qualifying time.
Additional details about pacers will be posted approximately 2 months prior to race day.
Come for the Run, Stay for the Weekend
In addition to the races, the fun-filled weekend events make the Santa Rosa Marathon a true destination running experience. Past events have included a Health and Fitness Expo, a Beer Festival, a Wine Dinner, and a Post Race Festival with free beer, pancakes, and dozens of vendors. The Santa Rosa Marathon was also named by Competitor Magazine for having the best swag for runners, including commemorative apparel and double spinner medals.
